Formula 1 racer Liam Lawson disclosed he narrowly avoided a life-threatening collision during Sunday's Mexican Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The dangerous situation occurred on the third rotation when track officials were spotted on the track as Lawson was rejoining the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his broken nose section

Competitor's Live Reaction

Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson radioed to his team engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Could you believe what happened? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I honestly couldn't believe what I was seeing"

"I rejoined with a fresh hard compound tires, and then I approached Turn One and suddenly there were two guys dashing across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, frankly, it was extremely hazardous"

Track Safety Questioned

"Obviously there's been a failure in communication somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't really seen that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We can't understand how on a active circuit marshals can be allowed to just run across the track like that. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some kind of clarification, but it really can't happen again"

Official Investigation Underway

The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is actively examining the events

"Subsequent to a first corner event, the race directors was notified that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" stated the regulatory authority

"In the third rotation, safety personnel were informed and made ready to access the circuit and clear the fragments once all cars had passed"

"As soon as it became apparent that Lawson had pitted, the directives to deploy marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was displayed in that area"

"Our inquiry continues what happened after that point"
