The future president of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after failing a vote of confidence that followed his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.

The motion against George Abaraonye reached the necessary two-thirds threshold to remove him from office, according to an announcement from the society.

Disputed Comments

The controversy began after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while addressing a university in Utah.

According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.

The president-elect is also reported to have written in a messaging group with fellow students appearing to welcome the incident.

Vote Outcome

The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on this week.

Official notices indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.

The notice stated that the future president was considered to have resigned in following the society's regulations.

Procedural Disputes

Proceedings were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.

In a statement, the student asserted that the count had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of process errors".

His response unequivocally denied that any representative acting for George had engaged in threatening or obstructive conduct.

Continuing Controversy

The student stated that significant concerns had been submitted to the governing body and that he remained president-elect.

His statement added that George was "grateful and honored to have the support of significantly more than half of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".

Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has chosen ideology over integrity".

External Reactions

On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an open letter to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show podcast.

The message accused the union of becoming a institution where "presidents of the union openly applaud the killing of a political opponent".

The statement warned that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every American political speaker who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".

The society had previously criticized the student's comments after Kirk's death and stated that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.

The student leader had been one of several students to discuss with Kirk at the society in spring.
